Hey look, i'm still alive! I know i haven't written anything in ages and no i don't have anything resembling as excuse. I'm just that lazy. I got logged out somehow, forgot my password and didn't get around to looking for it, lol.
To give ya'll a heads up, i'm gonna be changing my username on everything! As soon as i think of one that i like and doesn't raise a lot of questions, lol.
If you'd rather i didn't add you to either YIM or LJ feel free to say, i won't be offended. F-lists do get rather clogged from time to time.
I will update properly soon! Probably once i start the new LJ.

I was meant to meet the international studies tutor at my uni today to talk about me spending a year abroad and after waiting for an hour for him to arrive i came home in a rather worse mood than i left in. When i got back i found an email that he'd sent me 20mins before our meeting saying he needed to postpone. That's all very well but it takes me over half an hour to get to uni and so i didn't get it until i'd wasted 2 hours of my day not meeting with him. And so i replied to the email, and i think i may have been a bit snarky, and i think ooops is all that can really sum it up, lol.

» BSG
Well, i finally saw an episode of BSG, granted it was the 1978 version, lol. It wasn't bad, kinda trekkie-ish but the characters grew on me more than any star-trek ones ever have. I just have to say, the kid who played Boxey (i think his name was noah hathaway or something) is just the cutest kid!! He was about 7 in the ep i watched. Adama was really old and Starbuck was a bloke, i didn't see Roslin, if she was in the old version. So now i just need to see one of the new ones, lol.

Only one of them isn't SG (you can try and guess if you actually care, lol) I've left out the ones i know i'm never ever gonna touch again, because i'd hate to post something that caught someones attention when it's already been ditched, lol.

» One of those days
What can you do when during every study break you take your mum gets you doing chores?
I've been on the point of mental meltdown at several times today but everytime i went to get a cuppa or something mum asked me to slice chicken for dinner, cook dinner, hoover up the mess dad kept making. And i couldn't say no because she has so much to do trying to get the house ready to go on the market. But it means that i don't get a chance to chill out for even a second, so i never get back to studying or if i do i can't concentrate anyways! A bit of a nightmare. And now i'm freaking out about my math exams.
Plus the essay that i had to upload on the uni website yesterday doesn't seem to actually be there, and i don't know if it is or not. If it's not i might lose 10% a day that it's late only i dont seem to be able to upload it again. They do have my paper copy so hopefully i'll be ok.
Sorry for the rant, i'm just having one of those days and i thought you'd all just love to hear about it ;)

You are a stone key, and you unlock old and magical secrets. What you have to offer is powerful and difficult for many to understand, but invaluable to the few who can truly grasp it. Give the things you have carefully and wisely, because not everyone will use them for good.

Ok, hypothetical question...for now, lol.
Imagine a character was put in witness protection, with a new name. For the sake of explaining this we'll say she was called Mary and her new name is Jenny.
Obviously people who know her in her new life will call her Jenny, if she sees anyone from her old life they'll call her Mary. But in the narrative what should i call her?
For example:
Mary when she's alone even though she's in her Jenny life. And then Jenny when the narrative is from a new friend's POV (ie. Greg ran his fingers through Jenny's hair... but then later: Mary climbed into her empty bed)
or - should i stick with Mary throughout even though some people don't know that name. (This would mean using one name in the narrative and then a different one when people speak)
or- should i go with Jenny because that's who she is at the time (tho this would require a sudden change at points because she'll go from real life to witness protection and then back again)
What are the thoughts?
Thanks :)

» Back
Well, i'm home. It's been a long couple of weeks and yet shockingly short at the same time. I will put up some kind of run through of what i got up to later, but right now i need a cuppa and some collapsing. If anyone sent me email i will get to it, but i have about 660 coming in so it could be a while, lol. As for reading backdated LJ entries, i can't see it happening. Anyways, i'll be back later, hope everyone is ok and has had a good fortnight.
Oh, and on a semi-urgent side note, does anyone know a program(preferably of the free variety) that can convert .mov files into something that movie maker can read? Cheers :)

If anyone needs me i'll be on my mobile (but lets face it, what are the odds of that?) Otherwise i'll get all my emails when i get home. (Am i crazy for leaving jackfic sending me mail while i'm gone? lol) Anyways, have a good couple of weeks and i'll catch up with ya'll soon

» Update *gasp*
I just updated my website (a long overdue update i might add) New fics, new walls (unless they got up there first) New icons (which were probably here first) A new banner (cause the last one was terrible! one of the first art things i did back when i had no clue. This one is not great cause i got bored, lol, but i may change it eventually) A new page, although it's lacking! (If you can think of any more terms to add please buzz, cause it's been too long since i was new to remember what i didn't know, lol) An almost new page (but i left my notebook with the stuff in it at uni so couldn't actually add it, doh!) Then minor stuff, new email address on most of the pages, new ratings systems, more memorials and for the very observent the last chevron in the navigation bar is now not a duplicate of one of the others, lol, how lazy was i being not to make a 10th the 1st time around?!
That's about it. Please sign my guest book if you pop over there 'cause the last one got eaten so it's all empty and kinda miserable :(
http://eventhorizon.bravehost.com
If any links and stuff don't work then let me know, cause i reckon with uploading 200 odd pages all at once with a crappy html "browse for it" uploader, i probably missed one along the way.

» Mess Dinner
Well this was quite an event, as promised. We got there at about 6.45pm yesterday, had pre dinner champaigne and a mess photo (which they stood us all together for then after a bit of fiddling with the camera announced that it was done, no warning and no flash so i doubt any of us were looking the right way, lol)
I was sat next to a guest who used to be in the navy and now works security for the NEC. It turns out that he used to live in the town i grew up in and his two daughters went to the same primary school as me! What are the odds?
We discussed all the stuff we'd been told to avoid, such as religion and politics, lol. and dinner went on until 11pm (it started at 8) then we had speeches and finally got up at midnight and retired to the wardroom for more drinks (cause we'd all only had about a bottle of wine each!)
I got talking to another guest and after a few more glasses of wine we got into a bit of a debate. It started by him asking if i thought Richard Gere was hot, I said that he was alright but if we were talking older men then i prefered RDA. This moved the discussion onto Stargate and the fact that i'm a bit of sci-fi geek. At which point he said he'd let me in on a little secret, he was a bit of a sci-fi geek too, but only the original Star Trek series. Then came the debate, firstly over which of us was more a a sci-fi geek. He asked me questions about ST and i asked him stuff about SG and we came out drawing. So we moved on to ST - TNG as neither of us knew that much about it. We pretty much drew on that too but i couldn't remember Will Crusher's first name and then couldn't think of another question that he'd get wrong, so i lost, lolol.
We then got into a bit of a headed debate over how many people had heard of RDA, cause Rob hadn't even heard of Macgyver! So we asked a bunch of others who are in the unit and they all watch SG *bg* he so lost that one!
Mess games were...interesting. I'm very damaged, with the skin scraped off of both my lower arms, bruised ribs, pulled muscles, you name it...it was fantastic!
I got home at 7am this morning! That is how long it went on for...12 hours!! And i'd drunk enough red wine that my teeth and tongue were black (and my tongue is still a bit grey, lol) Needless to say i slept for a large chunk of today and am pretty much recovered. Can't wait for next year though, it has to have been the best social (coughs, sorry i mean formal) event we've had to date!

We had our mess dinner briefing tonight and it sounds...fun?
It went kinda like this:
You never ever ever ever ever ever ever pass the port counter-clockwise You never ever ever ever ever ever ever touch the mess silver You never ever ever ever ever ever ever get up from the table until the formal meal is over You never ever ever ever ever ever ever start eating until the admiral has You never ever ever ever ever ever ever stand to say the loyal toast (and we're kinda hoping that the RAF guys who are coming forget this (as they usually have to stand) cause it'd be kinda funny)
It went on kinda like that. Women who don't have their 1Cs (that means us) have to wear ball gowns and cover their shoulders. Hair must be up, dressily. If a man is seated on your right he will pour your port, you are not to do it yourself (not sure if they're seating us alternate here or if some of us will have to pour our own...we'll see)
I don't remember any more of it so i'm bound to screw something up, lol. At least theyre feeding us...lots!

» Adventure Training
Well, i've had a crazy weekend. We got to Lake Coniston (lake district, midlands-ish, UK) at about 10pm friday night and went straight to the pub. There was this horrible "someone bouncing on the bed" sound going on all night and it was freezing in our room, so i didn't get to sleep til about 5am (the sound turned out to be the window shutters rattling) Call to hands was 7am sat morning (we're the navy, they have no mercy!) and after a sleepy breakfast we got straight outside. A group went walking (hello, you can walk anywhere! lets do something a little more interesting) We went canoeing and were meant to meet up with the guys who went cycling at a coffee shop and swap over. But they got lost, cycled past the coffee shop and we canoed back (kinda glad cause i'm not good with bikes!) In the afternoon most people went walking up a creek (think cold, wet, middle of winter...needless to say i stayed at the site) The 3 of us that didn't go walking did the high ropes course (loads of wind, very shaky, very fun!) Then we went down a zip wire. 1 person zipped and the other 2 had to catch them at the bottom. it understandably amusing trying to help each other down. (FYI, it is apparently not a good idea to pull a guy along a zip wire by his foot whilst he is wearing a climbing harness, *laughs evily*) When the walkers got back we did the assult course, with jugs of water that we weren't allowed to spill. Our group took a respectable 24mins, and the other group (with some tips from us when they started falling over a lot) took an embarrasing 37mins, hehehe.
Today (after the nasty morning thing again, tho without that creaky shutter and with a little more heat) we did some orienteering. Each stamp got us some raft building material. We split off into Uni groups for it (as our naval unit is made up of people from about 5 diff ones) B'ham (that's mine) got all our stamps in 40mins. Leicester just got back inside the hour with all theirs. Warrick, aston and coventry (grouped together as there are less of them) only got 6/9 stamps, hehehe. Then came the raft building. Leicesters looked pretty good, ours scraped together at the last second (i don't do knots well!) and warrick...well. As soon as Warrick's raft hit the water it dissolved, so Leic and B'ham were batteling it out, desperatly trying to get past each other without resorting to too foul play. About 10meters from the end Leic barrels popped out from under their frame and they sunk *bg* leaving us with a clear and slightly drier victory! It was still darn cold in that lake tho, wouldn't have wanted to be completely submerged like some of them!
Then we cleaned up and came home, very tired, very achy, but it was muchly fun.
So there we go, if anyone noticed i was gone over the weekend (tho on here you wouldn't cause i seem to write about once every six months) this is why. Now i must sleep!
